iiMii Maker's Default M/F

Meet iiMii Maker's Default Miis

Originally, iiMii Maker's Archetype defaults were not going to be recreations of Nintendo's Default M and Default F as shown in the initial v1.0 of iiMii Maker. Instead, they would be defaulted to an original set of iiMiis named Kris and Kya - M and F respectively. The design and names of these characters were designed by Youtube comedian SirenXY. I sent early versions of the application for review and testing purposes and requested a design for original Default iiMiis for users when they're using the template. The stipulations were that they:

  1. Have default Height/Weight
  2. Use the default headshape
  3. Utilize one or more iiMii Maker-exclusive features (Such as multiple moles)
  4. Not be TOO detailed as it'll be just a template, but still unique enough to be iconic

These two iiMiis are the result of that. When I think back on it, I sometimes feel that I should have required the male have a name that starts with M and a female one that starts with F but in the long run I believe Kris and Kya are perfect, as gender (M and F) are intentionally ambiguous in iiMii Maker so it wouldn't have meant anything. The idea SirenXY came up with regarding having both names start with K and be no more than only 3 or 4 letters is great.
The iiMii Maker-exclusive features used are the flattened eyebrows, Kris' mouth shape and, most importantly, the color of the nose outline. (The last one really makes these two feel unique and special, unlike anything seen in any of Nintendo's Mii Maker(s).)

Kris and Kya As Default M/F

Problems surfaced when used as a template, however. Firstly, as a template, users are more inclined to quickly remove all makeup, glasses accessories and skin details such as freckles than to keep them and built upon them. That is the opposite effect of a template. Templates could be great for inspiration so maybe one day I'll have a list of templates users can choose from between Archetypes but that's for if they need inspiration to built from. These Archetype templates are not designed for inspiration. They're designed to work as a blank canvas without needing to REMOVE, just change (And, in turn, add or build upon) to become their finished iiMii. With so many details, Kris and Kya work more as unnecessarily detailed templates perhaps for inspiration instead of as a blank canvas. (Of course I can't just get a bald head and put opacity of all facial features to 0, because then users are inclined to go through and undo all of that change to opacity just to see what they're doing. I want a blank canvas but one they can get right into building instead of going through and taking extra time turning on each item they'll use such as eyes opacity.)

They Went Unused...

Despite all of that, however, none of it ended up being the reason Kris and Kya went unused. The reason they ultimately went unused in favor of recreations of Nintendo's iconic Default F and Default M is the fact that when it became time to launch iiMii Maker, I needed to let people know that "This is a full recreation of Nintendo's Mii Maker. It can create Miis PLUS more" and recreating Nintendo's Default M and F proves not only that iiMii Maker has the ability to create every Mii you've made on your Nintendo Devices - Telling everyone it's a feature-full Mii Maker - but it also let's people know that is exactly what it is: A recreation to Nintendo's Mii Maker. Kris and Kya, although they look like Miis with some changes, don't really scream "This was made with a Mii Maker recreation!" to the world and, instead, screams "This was made with a character creator and you can create characters, too!" Although that's still accurate and isn't a bad thing at all, it's difficult for independent developers such as myself to receive the limelight and get any attention to projects such as these, so letting people know that it's an improved version of something they already love is more convincing than, say, something brand new they'd need to invest the time and energy to decide whether they desire that project's fruit or not. Even if it isn't brand new or it is brand new, letting people know it's already up their alley of interest by comparing it to things they are already familiar with and love to use (Or used in the past) is generally just easier to market so in the end, as much as I wish it didn't have to be, Kris and Kya ended up not being iiMii Maker's Default M and Default F.

But That Isn't Entirely True!

A new update will be coming in the future that allows you to customize your own Default M and Default F - Archetype portraits included. It'll even allow you to change the default iiMii name and creator name so you won't have to keep putting your creator name if you're the only one making iiMiis on your device. For iiMii enthusiasts, maybe Kris and Kya will end up being the Default M and Default F for them after all!
Keep sharing your iiMiis and keep showing me your awesome creations! I loved seeing those insanely unique Miis back in 2012 (Midna, Goomba, Kirby Miis... You name it!) and with a much more powerful Mii Maker that makes Nintendo's seem so limited, the Miis that can be created are even wider!
